The Airbus A319 exhaled deeply. A thunderous roar from the jet engines battled the ice, blowing out a plume of defiance. The rescue mission surged forward, breaking the silence over McMurdo Station, a United States Antarctic research center located about 700 miles east of Concordia Station, on the southern tip of Ross Island. It had been closed down for winter and was without regular access until the end of August. There, an American scientist fell ill this week, requiring a surgical intervention that could not be safely provided on the ice. He was taken to Christchurch, New Zealand.
