The New York Times – ‘Big Brother’ in Antarctica

Arriving in Antarctica reminded me of traveling through Europe late at night. I wander through a rural Romanian town in the rain, desperately seeking a bed. At last I happen across a youth hostel. I go in and pay for a room. But in Antarctica, the doors are closed and I can’t leave until the end of the year.

Altogether, 13 people are locked inside our station — an eclectic collection of skills, experience, personalities and stories from different backgrounds and countries. It is Antarctica’s version of “Big Brother.”
